Russian sausage magnate Pavel Antov, a lawmaker who criticized the war on Ukraine this summer, mysteriously died at a hotel in India on Saturday while traveling for his birthday—becoming the latest in a string of puzzling high-profile critics of Vladimir Putin who have died under unexplained circumstances since the country launched a war with Ukraine earlier this year.

Antov died after falling from the third floor of his luxury hotel in the southern district of India’s Rayagada, according to Indian police official Vivekanand Sharma, who said police believe Antov died by suicide, though they are still investigating the matter.

Pavel Antov had come to celebrate his 66th birthday in the Rayaga region of Orissa state and incomprehensibly jumped from the third floor of his hotel. “He was depressed after the death of a friend, Vladimir Budanov” said his Indian guide. Local police are calling it suicide.

The news of Pechorin’s death came less than two weeks after the chairman of the board of Russia’s largest private oil company, Ravil Maganov, died in what Russian news agencies cited as an accidental fall from a hospital window.

Initially, a statement by his company Lukoil said Maganov “passed away after a severe illness” on 1 September but did not give further details.

Russian news reports later stated his body was found on the grounds of Moscow’s Central Clinical Hospital, where Russia’s political and business elite are often treated.

Maganov appeared to have fallen from a sixth-story window, the reports said.

Some sources claimed he tripped and fell while smoking, stating a pack of cigarettes was found by the window. The news site RBK also said police were investigating the possibility of suicide.

Boris A. Berezovsky

2013

LONDON — A British coroner said Thursday that he could not establish whether the mysterious death of Boris A. Berezovsky, a businessman and power broker from Russia, was suicide or homicide.

The unusual open verdict seemed to offer an aptly enigmatic epitaph for Mr. Berezovsky, a onetime mathematics professor who lived a life of intrigue
and drama in Russia from the breakup of the Soviet Union, when he acquired great wealth, until 2000, when he fell afoul of President Vladimir V. Putin and fled into self-exile in London.

From here, he mounted a sustained political campaign against Mr. Putin until 2013, when he was found dead in a locked bathroom at a luxury home outside London belonging to a former wife, Galina Besharova.

Boris-A- Berezovsky
Speculative theories have swirled around Mr. Berezovsky’s death ever since, not least because one of his close associates, the former K.G.B. officer Alexander V. Litvinenko, died in 2006 after being poisoned with a rare radioactive isotope, polonium 210.
